If You Are Stopped What Should You Do?

If a trooper indicates you are to pull over, do so promptly, obeying any commands he or she gives from the squad car. As the officer approaches keep both hands visible and remain calm. Try not to give any reason to suspect you are a danger.

It is advisable to have your driver's license, registration and insurance info handy. Be polite at all times, but remember that you have rights, and you should insist they are respected.

Night Time Stops

Turn the interior lights of your vehicle on before the officer approaches and put your hands on the wheel. Ask any passenger to remain quiet and still. By doing so, you will demonstrate to the officer that you are not a threat to the officer's safety. This will have a noticeable impact on the officer's demeanor.

Field Sobriety Tests

A police officer may ask you to perform a number of tests at the side of the road known as field sobriety tests. While we cannot give you legal advice as to whether or not to comply with these requests in the context of this website, it is important to remember that behavior will influence an officer. A poor attitude, arrogance or lack of respect for the officer will only serve to inflame an already problematic situation. In short, telling the officer that you pay his or her salary will not help and will probably lead to an arrest for DWI. The consequences of an arrest and conviction for DWI include:

  • Fines
  • Court costs
  • Potential for increased insurance rates
  • Participation in the drinking driver program
  • Potential jail time
  • Installation of an ignition interlock device
  • A criminal record
