Timothy Johanson, known to his athletes as “Coach J,” was honored for his exceptional leadership of both the girls’ and boys’ varsity swimming programs at Mamaroneck High School. Under his guidance, the school captured its first-ever Section 1 Varsity Swimming Championship — a historic achievement for the program.
Beyond competitive success, Coach J is deeply committed to the holistic development of his student-athletes. He provides academic mentorship, college recommendations, and meaningful community engagement opportunities, including organizing volunteer efforts for the Mamaroneck Schools’ Foundation Triathlon fundraiser.
Reflecting on his impact, Coach J shared that the most rewarding part of coaching is witnessing athletes transform from “nervous middle-schoolers into confident, capable seniors.” While championship titles are significant milestones, he believes true success lies in helping students build discipline, teamwork, and lifelong friendships that extend far beyond the pool.

Many former athletes return years later to share their professional and personal achievements — a testament to the enduring influence she strives to have beyond competition.
